In a major step towards modernising postal services in remote regions, India Post has partnered with drone logistic company Skye Air Mobility to deliver shipments in hard - to - reach areas across difficult terrains within Assam and Himachal Pradesh states through what is described as India’s largest postal drone network.
As reported by Asian News Service (IANS), a private Indian news agency based in New Delhi with reference to the country’s Ministry of Communications, the Indian Post Department , India launched the delivery of mail and parcels by drones on the Mandi - Rehardhar route, in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
According to the agency, the project is being carried out under the direction of the Minister of Communications and Development of the Northeast Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia.
The initiative aims to facilitate postal delivery in remote mountainous areas, as well as to increase the speed and efficiency of postal services.
The Mandi to Rehardhar drone delivery route by India post is the pilot phase of this groundbreaking initiative connecting the central post office in Mandi with the post office in Rehardar. The distance between the two locations is about 12 kilometres, and with the use of conventional transport, delivery takes more than two hours while the drone will deliver shipments to just a 7 - minute flight.
Drones can bypass winding roads and challenging weather, the autonomous UAVs are capable of transporting up to 10 kg of cargo and flying distances from 5 km to over 80 km on a single trip.
The drones are equipped with “Physical AI” autonomous navigation that evaluates live cloud and wind patterns, allowing them to adapt paths dynamically in temperature from - 10°C to 50°C.
The system enables real - time tracking of Branch Office mail bags between Account Offices and Branch Post Offices.
Beyond traditional mail, the network is built to reliably deliver time - sensitive items like life - saving medicines, government notices, and pension documents even when roads are blocked by snow or flooding.
Following this pilot stage in the next to three months, around 150 drone delivery routes across difficult geographies are planned to open, including 110 locations in Himachal Pradesh and 40 sites in Assam.
The Minister of Communications and Development said on a social network that
the journey, which previously took hours due to the complexity of the terrain,
will be completed in just 7 minutes, with the possibility of real - time
tracking. What makes this environmentally sustainable initiative especially significant is that it arose directly
from the comments of rural postmen and postal employees.
The Ministry reported that the drone system will make it possible to track
shipments in real time, reduce delays linked to the difficulty of moving
through rough terrain and guarantee a more sustainable logistics solution.
The agency added that the initiative will improve local communities access to postal services, which will contribute to social and economic integration.
