Cabo Verde | Unexpected Run at the FIFA World Cup has Triggered a Significant Surge in Global Tourism Interest in the Country

Cabo Verde’s unexpected run at the FIFA World Cup has triggered a significant surge in global tourism interest in the West African archipelago. The Blue Sharks became the smallest nation in history to play a knockout match at the World Cup when they faced Argentina, pushing defending champion in extra time before falling 3 - 2.

This outstanding performance and exposure has translated into a sharp rise in travel searches for this tropical island nation in the central Atlantic Ocean of 550.000 people with TUI  Group, a renowned German leisure, travel and tourism company headquartered in Hanover, reporting a doubling of searches for the destination.

Expedia, famous company operates fare aggregators and travel metasearch engines, based in Seattle, Washington, rccorded an increase of more than 800%  in searches from the United States alone, while interest from Japan also climbed 110%, according to travel data.

Cabo Verde is a stunning tropical archipelago composed by 10 volcanic islands 563 kilometres west of Senegal featuring endless beaches, towering mountains, a dry tropical climate with 350 sunny days a year, and a rich mix of Portguese and African cultures.

Islands like Sal and Boa Vista have long stretches of white sand and clear water. They are world - famous for windsurfing, kitesuefing, due to strong, steady trade winds as well as for scuba diving.

On the island of Fogo, visitors can climb Pico do Fogo, an active volcano. You can even hike its black ash craters and drink the local wine grown in the volcanic soil. Santo Anttão is a hiker’s paradise. It features steep, green mountains, deep canyons and hidden paths that wind through sugarcane and fruit valleys.

The capital city of Mindelo on São Vicente island is the cultural hub. It is known for its colonial buildings, art, traditional music like morna, and a lively nightlife.

Currently welcoming approximately 1.2 million visitors annually, predominantly European travellers at all - inclusive resorts on the islands of Boavista and Sal, Cabo Verde has been actively working to diversify its visitor base, supported by a US$75 million World Bank investment in its tourism sector.

Historical precedent suggests the so - called “World Cup effect” can yield lasting results. Croatia saw global awareness double and gained an estimated $1 billion in tourism revenue following its 2018 World Cup final appearance in Russia, while Morocco’s international arrivals jumped from 10.9 million to 14.5 million in the year after its 2022 semi – final run in Qatar.

Whether Cabo Verde can replicate that trajectory remains to be seen, but the football tournament most important globally has delivered a level of international exposure that few marketing campaigns could reach.
