Cuba | Established its First Official Agrotourism Network

Cuba established its first agrotourism network featuring 18 working farms in the western province of Pinar del Rio, famous for its lush tobacco fields, dramatic limestone mountains called mogotes, and rich eco - reserves. Located about 150 km from Havana, it features the UNESCO - listed Viñales Valley, pristine Caribbean beaches like Cayo Jutías and María La Gorda for top - tier scuba diving

The network’s core features centres on sustainable agriculture, heritage preservation, and ecofriendly travel. These farms specialize in tobacco cultivation, livestock farming, and diverse crop production

The network offers visitors unique experiences

•    Farm tours: Learning about organic, small – scale farming techniques.
•    Cultural exchange: Exploring local peasant heritage and traditions.
•    Direct impact: Supporting local rural communities and agricultural development.

Local authorities including the principal specialist of the provincial government’s Directorate of Territorial Development, Jorge Freddy Ramírez, highlight that these farms hold deep historical traditions and rural customs, and told the newspaper Granma that they boast authentic treasures and high traditional values that endure through the centuries.

The official cited among the attractions for visitors the way of life, the production techniques, the way of handling animals as well as the existence of a kitchen whose food goes directly from the plantations to the table.

The specialist pointed out that the productive structures linked to this experience have received different training actions with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and that the call is open for other initiatives that intend to join.

Among the requirements to integrate the network, the official mentioned in the first place that the farms maintain the agro – productive and livestock traditions of the region.

According to the expert, agroturism is a sub modality of rural tourism that has been gaining ground worldwide for several decades.
