The Government of Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India, renowned for its rich history, Dravidian - style Hindu temples, and vibrant culture, led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, has unveiled an ambitious packages of reforms including the installation of 20,000 public charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) by 2031.
This initiative is part of a long – term strategy to promote clean mobility, strengthen charging infrastructure, and encourage private investment in the fast - growing EV sector, drawing from models adopted in Kerala and Karnataka.
According to Trinity Mirror, a well - established daily newspaper and publishing company based in Chennai, this relevant charging network project is part of an established roadmap, accelerated following a high – level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Sai Kumar, resulted in a partnership between technical and local government, aiming to position the region a leader in sustainability mobility.
The push comes amid at least 520 new electric vehicles hitting the state’s roads daily, while public charging capacity continues to lag behind registrations. According to official data, the state has one public charger for every 254 EVs, compared to Karnataka’s ratio of one for every 104 vehicles, the best in the country.
To speed up deployment and attract private investment, the government announced three key initiatives that remove barriers to entry for infrastructure developers:
• Dedicated metering for EVs allows chargers to be installed without the need for a separate connection, billing only for energy consumed under a specific tariff.
• Flexible connection options are maintained for those who prefer an exclusive service.
• The 2023 EV Policy is planned to be revised to reduce or eliminate fixed and demand charges in high and extra – high voltage installations.
With these measures, the administration seeks to remove structural obstacles and make private investment economically viable in this crucial phase of adoption, this ensuring the state’s leadership in the transition to green mobility in India.
