Vietnam | Achieved a Major Milestone in Electric Mobility with Nearly 375,000 EVs on the Road

Vietnam has achieved a major milestone in electric mobility with nearly 375,000 EVs on the road. This rapid growth is driven by government policies that extended registration fee waivers and reduced the Special Consumption Tax to 1-3% through early 2027 to ensure cost parity with traditional internal combustion vehicles.

The expansion goes far beyond passenger cars, as the government has initiated a sweeping plan to encourage users transition over 70 million petrol motorbikes to electric bikes.

Currently private cars account for the majority of the country’s electric vehicle fleet, with 369.849 units, in addition to 3.396 trucks and 1.571 electric buses.

The Vietnamese Government believes that this expansion contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. However, the increase in the number of vehicles has also highlighted the need to expand the network of charging stations and strengthen the supporting infrastructure.

To sustain this growth, the government is aggressively expanding infrastructure. Prime  Minister Minh Chinh recently mandated that urban planning and residential complexes projects integrate EVs charging stations and the Ministry of Constructiom updates its energy transition program for transport, with priority given to the development of national charging network and the incorporation of electric mobility solutions into smart city projects.

Major players like the V- Green charging network are rolling out massive infrastructural investments. This rapid transition places Vietnam’s EV market share second only to China among major global markets.

Specialists point out that the strengthening of infrastructure, along with incentives for users and the development of new technologies, will be key to consolidating the growth of electric mobility in Vietnam.and a benchmark in the region.
