Kenya | Wildlife Service is Integrating AI - Enabled Surveillance and Drone Technology to Strengthen Conservation Across Vital Ecosystems

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is integrating AI - enabled surveillance and drone technology to target persistent challenges including poaching, track wildlife, and mitigate human - wildlife conflict.

This digital infrastructure and platforms developed for conservation operations improve ranger response times enabling them to detect threats, track wildlife movements and respond to incidents in real time across vital ecosystems like the Masasai Mara National Park and Tsavo National Park.

Anchored in its 2024 - 28 strategic plan, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is embedding thermal imaging systems, advanced communication tools and the EarthRanger platform, developed by the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, across its operations, including at Maasai Mara National Reserve, allows wardens to track patrols, log incidents, and monitor species via smartphones in real time.

AI - enabled thermal imaging provides round - the - clock surveillance capable of distinguishing between human and animal movement, triggering instant alerts to rangers even in low - visibility conditions.

Drone patrols deployed by KWS Airwing for rapid aerial reconnaissance in remote inaccessible terrain, significantly improve situational awareness and evidence collection, reducing response times anti - poaching operations, according to Kenya Wildlife Service conservation technology head Victor Matsanza.

The service has acknowledged that connectivity gaps in remote areas and equipment scaling remain ongoing challenges, but plans are underway to expand drone fleets and AI surveillance systems nationwide.
